Explosion reported at De Pere foundry, fire ignited when metal byproduct mixed with rain

DE PERE – Fire crews put out a fire at De Pere Foundry, 805 S. Sixth St., Thursday afternoon following a report of an explosion.

De Pere Fire Rescue and the Fox River Fire District were dispatched to the foundry around 3 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders saw smoke coming from the roof on the building's south side, and foundry employees were working on controlling the fire with fire extinguishers, according to De Pere Fire Rescue.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the main fire, located on the roof of the single-story building, according to the fire department.

No one was injured in the fire.

De Pere Fire Rescue said the fire started when molten metal byproduct mixed with rainwater, making embers that ignited materials on the building's roof.

Employees were able to control the flames before fire departments arrived on scene, and responding fire units cleared the scene within an hour, according to De Pere Fire Rescue.

In a news release, De Pere Fire Rescue shared a safety reminder for businesses and homes to keep a working fire extinguisher on hand at all times.
