Explosions rock Russian border city Kursk, local authorities report overnight drone attack

Several powerful explosions rocked the Russian border city of Kursk overnight on Aug. 27, with the oblast’s governor, Roman Starovoyt, reporting that a drone had hit an apartment complex.

In total, 10 explosions were recorded across Kursk Oblast. The Russian Ministry of Defense subsequently reported that air defense units in both Kursk and Bryansk oblasts had successfully downed several drones, blaming the attack on Ukraine.

Traditionally, Ukraine neither confirms nor denies its involvement in drone attacks across the Russian border. No injuries have been reported thus far.

Video of the overnight attack has gone viral on Russian social media. Car alarms could be heard ringing across Kursk, and minor damage, including broken windows, has been recorded.

Around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, the authorities of the neighboring Bryansk Oblast also reported the downing of a "Ukrainian drone."

Kursk, which lies on Ukraine’s northeastern border across from Sumy Oblast, is perhaps more familiar to Western readers for two reasons: Firstly, the region was the site of the Battle of Kursk, WWII’s second-largest battle.

Secondly, the Kursk was an Oscar II-class submarine that was damaged and sunk during a Russian naval exercise in 2000. Russian incompetence and refusal to accept Western aid resulted in the deaths of all onboard.
