What defines public speaking?

Public speaking generally refers to an individual speaking to a live audience in a formal setting without interruption. This form of interpersonal communication is a foundational skill for all leaders. Knowing what to say and how to say it may seem simple, but the capability of organizing, writing and delivering speeches is something that most adults are not comfortable with. Introducing youth to public speaking as early as possible is crucial to helping them develop into confident communicators.

The Flagler County 4-H Youth Development Program has several opportunities for youth to be involved in such projects. For existing Flagler County 4-H members, there will be an opportunity to compete in County Events in February. At County Events, members ages 8-18 may give a speech on any 4-H topic. This competition provides a space for youth to express ideas effectively with poise and confidence. For members that may have something to showcase that needs visual aids (posters, models, etc.) there is also a competition at County Events specifically for demonstrations and illustrated talks. Any of these can provide opportunities for youth to advance and compete at district and state level events. Please talk to your club leader or county 4-H Agent for more information on these opportunities.

Another opportunity provided through Flagler County 4-H is the Florida 4-H Public Speaking Program powered by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), formerly known as the Tropicana Public Speaking Contest. This will be introduced in Flagler County schools in the spring. Participating fourth, fifth and sixth grade classes will allow the opportunity for students to give a 3-5 minute speech on the topic of their choice. This contest is originally conducted in the classroom and students can advance to school and county level competitions.

Whether it be 4-H members participating in public speaking at the club or county level or our school enrichment programs, 4-H provides an array of opportunities for youth to become effective communicators. Most importantly, 4-H professionals have tips and tricks to help youth master their public speaking skills.
