Extradition process begins for man charged in death of woman found in Roscoe storage unit

ROCKFORD — The extradition process has begun for a man accused of killing a woman and storing her body in a Roscoe storage unit.

Winnebago County State's Attorney J. Hanley announced that Jonathan J. VanDuyn, 34, was indicted Wednesday on a charge of first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death.

VanDuyn was initially charged in August in connection to the death of Michelle Arnold-Boesiger.

The 33-year-old Harvard woman was reported missing in November 2020 and was found March 1 inside a U-Haul storage unit that she had been renting in Roscoe.

At an August news conference, Hanley said Arnold-Boesiger was found covered in blankets and bedding and inside a black Jeep Renegade registered to VanDuyn. He also said there were "odor eliminators" in the vehicle to cover the smell of the decomposing body.

Hanley said VanDuyn and Arnold-Boesiger had been in a relationship when she was reported missing and that there had been a history of physical abuse of Arnold-Boesiger by VanDuyn.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Mark Peters performed the autopsy and determined that the manner of death, according to Hanley, "was either homicide by asphyxiation, accidental from ingestion of drugs, or a combination of the two, i.e., that she was rendered unconscious by drugs and then asphyxiated."

Winnebago County authorities have begun the extradition process for VanDuyn from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections where he is serving a seven-year, six-month prison sentence for a Walworth County charge of interference with child custody.

First-degree murder is a Class M felony punishable by 20-60 years in prison. Any sentence to the Department of Corrections is to be served at 100% and will be followed by three years of mandatory supervised release. Concealment of a homicidal death is a Class 3 felony punishable by 2-5 years in prison.
