‘Extremely malnourished’ horses had no water, food, cops say. Kentucky owner arrested

A Kentucky woman was arrested Sunday after deputies found several of her horses “extremely malnourished.”

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to a home in Big Clifty after learning of underweight horses, including one that was possibly dying. Shiloh Lisa Lee, 55, said the horses belonged to her and told the sheriff’s office it was hard to put weight on the horses because they were older, according to an arrest citation.

The arresting deputy asked Lee about a white horse laying in the back of the field, and Lee said a neighbor came earlier in the day and put it down, according to court records. But the horse had not been put down, and there had been no attempt to do so, the sheriff’s office said.

“The horse was extremely malnourished and had been attempting to get up for sometime with no success,” the citation notes. “The horse had dug a rut in the dirt with its hooves attempting to get up.”

The deputy then put the horse down, but also noticed other horses that were extremely malnourished, according to the arrest citation. There was no food or water in the field for the horses, the citation states.

Smith’s remaining horses were scheduled to be seized, according to court records.

Smith was charged with six counts of second-degree cruelty to animals and is scheduled to be arraigned in Grayson County District Court Wednesday.
