The following is a roundup of recent happenings in Ashland University sports.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Former Ashland University national champion Katie Nageotte won her first women's pole vault outdoor world gold medal on the third day of the World Athletics Outdoor Championships July 17 in Eugene, Ore.

Nageotte won the event with a top mark of 4.85 meters/15-feet-11, which was not only her best mark this season but tied for the best vault in the world this outdoor season.

She advanced to the final by being one of five competitors with a qualification-best mark of 4.50/14-9 on July 15.

Nageotte, the 2021 Summer Olympics gold medalist and 2022 indoor worlds silver medalist in the pole vault, won two NCAA Division II national titles and was a three-time All-American in two years as an Eagle.

The USA's Trevor Bassitt, left, and Rai Benjamin finished 3rd and 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles during the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

Bassitt earns two medals

Former AU national champion Trevor Bassitt stuck around in Eugene following his men's 400-meter hurdles bronze medal and landed another world medal – this time, a gold one.

Bassitt anchored the Team USA 4x400 relay in the heats phase on July 23, and that quartet had the fastest time of the night at a then-season-best 2:58.96. Because Bassitt did that, he became a world champion on July 24, when the American foursome of Elija Godwin, Michael Norman, Bryce Deadmon and Champion Allison earned gold by crossing the finish line in a world-season-best 2:56.17.

Bassitt returns home with two world medals following his third-place finish on July 19 in the 400 hurdles in a personal-best time of 47.39 seconds.

On July 12, Bassitt was named the 2021-22 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year.

Finishing his storied AU career in late May, Bassitt collected 10 Division II national championships and 21 All-America awards.
