All eyes this week on Lipscomb Academy football, ESPNU game

Welcome to "The Bootleg," our high school sports newsletter. I'm Tom Kreager, high school sports editor of The Tennessean.

We roar into Week 2 with all eyes on a game involving the top high school football team in Tennessee playing the top program in Alabama.

Lipscomb Academy, the defending TSSAA Division II-AA state champion, will load up and head to Alabama for a Saturday game at Thompson High in Alabaster, Alabama. Thompson is the three-time defending Class 7A state champions. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. and will be on ESPNU.

It's the biggest test the Mustangs have faced under fourth-year coach Trent Dilfer. One could argue it's the biggest game in school history. No state title will be handed out. But Lipscomb Academy will play under the lights against one of the premier programs in the country in a game featured on national television.

Thompson features five-star recruits in both safety Tony Mitchell and defensive end Peter Woods.

Mitchell, an Alabama commitment, is the No. 3 prospect in the state and No. 33 overall recruit in the country. Woods, a Clemson commitment, is the No. 7 prospect in the state and No. 50 player in the country.

Lipscomb Academy's offense will face a tall challenge in getting first downs, let alone scoring points.

However, this puts the school on a national stage and gives a platform to see where the program is at on a national stage.

The Mustangs (1-0) currently are atop the Tennessee Super 25 rankings as well as ranked first in the Associated Press' statewide poll.
