FA Cup draw LIVE: Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City avoid each other in quarter-finals

Chelsea have been handed an away trip to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup quarter-finals, as the Premier League’s top three avoided one another in Thursday’s draw.

Manchester City were drawn away to Southampton while Liverpool will face the winners of Monday’s tie between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield.

Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough produced another Premier League scalp as they knocked out Tottenham Hotspur to reach the last eight, following their penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Josh Coburn’s winner secured a memorable win over Antonio Conte’s side and Middlesbrough’s reward is another home tie against Chelsea, who came from behind to defeat Luton Town on Wednesday.

Manchester City avoided an upset against Peterborough to advance to the quarter-finals and face Premier League opposition in Southampton at St Mary’s.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could face a first meeting against Nottingham Forest since 1999 if Steve Cooper’s team continue their cup run and defeat Huddersfield at the City Ground on Monday night.

The winner of the match between Everton or non-league Boreham Wood, who meet at Goodison Park this evening, will travel to Crystal Palace.

The quarter-final matches will take place on the weekend of 20-21 March.

Tuchel happy to progress despite off-field distractions

19:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel was pleased to see Chelsea bounce back from Sunday’s Carabao Cup defeat and stay focused on matter on the pitch as they beat Luton to reach the quarter-finals last night.

“It was huge difference to come from Wembley from a final, after which we gave a well-deserved day off to the players. Then you have one day to turn around your mind and settle into this new challenge,” Tuchel said. “There were lot of players out and we have more or less no defensive players and a completely new set-up and a completely new competition.

“There was some noise about the club around of course throughout the day so it was not so easy to focus but we did very well. We conceded straightaway but then we had big chances not only to equalise but also to go ahead deservedly.“But then we conceded another one and in the second half we stepped up, we pushed relentlessly but never impatiently and we deserved to win. So full credit, we did not over-expect from us and we played a very humble match very seriously.”

Liverpool quadruple talk is ‘crazy’, Jurgen Klopp insists

19:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Jurgen Klopp insists it is “crazy” to even think about Liverpool winning an unprecedented quadruple.

Success in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea has secured their first trophy of the season but there remains a long way to go in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League.

The Reds defeated Norwich in Wednesday’s fifth round cup tie, before Inter Milan visit next week as they attempt to overturn a 2-0 last-16 Champions League deficit while the gap to league leaders Manchester City is six points with a match in hand.

“No team in the history of English football has won the quadruple, right? That is because it is incredibly difficult,” said Klopp.

“We are still behind Manchester City (in the Premier League. We are not close to thinking about any crazy stuff like that.”

Southampton ‘can dream’ of FA Cup run

18:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Southampton defender Romain Perraud believes Southampton “can dream” of FA Cup glory after defeating West Ham to reach the quarter-finals.

Perraud scored a stunning opening goal as the Saints secured a 3-1 home win and the full-back said: “I hope we will play in St Mary’s in the next round, because the fans were amazing tonight again. At home we are stronger and we have to continue like this, but we have to dream.”

Boreham Wood eyeing Everton scalp

18:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard will not stop his players swapping shirts with Everton's - because he has his eye on Frank Lampard's clobber.

Wood have beaten AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth to earn a dream FA Cup fifth-round trip to Goodison Park.

Many lower-league managers clamp down on their players exchanging shirts with top-flight sides, claiming it shows the opposition too much respect.

But Garrard is having none of that, especially after defender and Toffees fan Kane Smith memorably celebrated on the pitch at Bournemouth with a replica shirt of his hero, former Everton full-back Tony Hibbert.

"I'm taking Frank Lampard's shirt off his back! His zippy, his ball. I'm getting everything," Garrard said.

"Seriously, though. This isn't too much respect. We've done our analysis on them. So the respect's there. Hugely. I'm not foolish in any way, shape, or form. They are unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.

‘Typical Tottenham’: Alan Shearer unimpressed after Spurs crash out

18:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Alan Shearer described Spurs’ FA Cup exit to Middlesbrough as “typical Tottenham” after Antonio Conte’s side were beaten in extra-time in the fifth round tie.

Substitute Josh Coburn pounced soon after half-time in the extra 30 minutes to seal the home side’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Shearer believes the victory for Chris Wilder’s side was more than merited.

“This was no fluke,’ Shearer said on the BBC. “Spurs were so flaky - typical Tottenham.

“[Middlesbrough] were the better team from start to finish. They were first to every tackle, they created chances, and had more energy.

“Certainly in extra-time, they made the better substitutions and Chris Wilder can be extremely proud of what his team has achieved tonight.

“What a night for Middlesbrough and their fans, he (Wilder) was up for it, the players were up for it, it’s a shame the Tottenham players weren’t up for it. Typical Tottenham, Middlesbrough thoroughly deserved to be in the quarter-finals.”

Jack Grealish eyes FA Cup glory with Man City

18:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Jack Grealish is aiming to go one better than his previous best as he targets FA Cup success with Manchester City this season.

The England international scored his first ever goal in the competition as his fine strike sealed a 2-0 win at Peterborough in round five.

Grealish appeared in an FA Cup final with former club Aston Villa, playing the whole game in 2015 as Tim Sherwood’s side were beaten 4-0 by Arsenal.

Now he wants to get back to Wembley and toast a first major cup win of his career, having also captained Villa in a losing effort against his current side in the 2020 Carabao Cup final.

“It’s a great occasion for the fans, a great day out and it’s a massive, massive competition, so, from our point of view, we just want to go all the way.

“That’s the special thing about the cup. It’s a great competition. I absolutely love coming to stadiums like (Peterborough) – it reminds me of my old days when I was on loan at Notts County.”

Vieira demands improvement from Palace despite FA Cup progress

18:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Patrick Vieira warned Crystal Palace they will have to improve if they want to reach Wembley after they were made to work hard to beat Stoke 2-1 in the FA Cup fifth round.

It means Palace are through to the last eight of the competition and now only one victory away from an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Vieira, who won the competition five times as a player, said: “It is a really exciting period and moment I would say but it is still one step before Wembley.

“We are pleased and happy to go to the next round but I was really disappointed with the way we played.

“We didn’t play well, we didn’t use the ball well enough or create enough chances and we didn’t defend well as a team. If we want to go further, we will have to play better.”

Klopp hails ‘complete performance’ from Minamino

18:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not believe Takumi Minamino’s match-winning performance in the 2-1 win over Norwich was driven by anger at being left out of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Despite the Japan international playing a pivotal role in helping the side get to Wembley he did not even make it off the bench in the penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea.

However, he started against the Canaries and his two first-half goals helped secure Klopp’s first FA Cup quarter-final despite Lukas Rupp’s effort 14 minutes from time.

“Very disappointing I can imagine,” said Klopp of Minamino missing out at Wembley.

“How Taki is, I don’t think that was the reason he played good tonight. He is not the person for this kind of anger but it is just the situation he is in.”

Tuchel stands by Abramovich’s intention to sell Chelsea

18:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said the news of Roman Abramovich’s intention to sell the club, which broke an hour before the Blues kicked-off against Luton in the FA Cup fifth round, was a distraction but will not impact his team in the short-term.

Abramovich, who is facing the threat of sanctions from the British state, has confirmed his intention to sell Chelsea amid Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine.

Asked about how the news impacted his team and whether he agreed with Abramovich’s decision to sell after Chelsea came from behind to beat Luton at Kenilworth Road, Tuchel told the BBC: “I heard it a little bit earlier than you but it was still close to kick-off. It is big news.

“I think every decision he takes is the right decision. It is his choice and his club, and it’s not on me to comment.”

FA Cup quarter-final draw

The draw for the FA Cup quarter-finals takes place this evening where the remaining teams will find out how they face in the last eight.

England manager Gareth Southgate will be drawing the balls from Wembley stadium ahead of the fifth round fixture between Everton and Boreham Wood at Goodison Park.

Manchester City became the first team to reach the quarter-final stage when they defeated Peterborough on Tuesday night with goals from Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish sealing the tie. Crystal Palace booked their spot in the last eight on the same night with a well-fought 2-1 win over Stoke before Championship side Middlesbrough left it late to overcome Tottenham Hotspur in extra-time.

Wednesday night saw Chelsea sneak past Luton Town, Romelu Lukaku scoring the decisive goal after the Blues twice came from behind, Southampton knocked out West Ham and Liverpool continued their unbeaten run in 2022 with a 2-1 victory over Norwich.

Two more fifth round fixtures need to take place with Everton hosting Boreham Wood tonight before Nottingham Forest face Huddersfield Town on Monday.

The four quarter-final fixtures drawn will be held over the weekend of 18-21 March.
