The finishing sprint of Sunday’s final stage of the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina could have gotten ugly for Fabio Jakobsen. Jacobson had positioned himself next to the barriers in the bunch sprint when he was struck in the face by a spectator’s hand holding a smartphone over the barriers and into the path of the riders.

Jacobson’s glasses were knocked off and the person’s phone went flying onto the course. Impressively Jacobson managed to keep his line and avoid crashing.

The incident brought back the memory of Jakobsen’s horrendous crash in the Tour of Poland in 2020. To this day the athlete has no memory of the near-fatal crash. “I think a lot of people will have experienced a déjà vu to Tour of Poland,” the rider posted on Twitter. “This case was partly my own fault. There was space to use next to the barriers, but I didn’t see the hand.”

Thankfully the injuries Jakobsen suffered yesterday were minor in comparison. “I have a cut and it's swollen, but luckily things ended well," Jakobsen posted on Twitter.
