'This is the fabric of Weymouth': Jackson Square event kicks off anniversary celebrations

WEYMOUTH – Crystal Carbone, of Weymouth, set up her tent on Broad Street in Jackson Square shortly before noon Saturday.

She started her business, Crystal Leigh Customs, in July last year and customizes items including T-shirts, snow globes, water bottles and more. Her three children helped her set up, and her eldest daughter, Bella, 11, made jewelry to sell.

"I want to be networking and meet people around here, as well making some money, of course," Carbone said.

Crystal Leigh Customs was one of about 45 local businesses and organizations from the Jackson Square area that brought their merchandise and services to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the town. Founded in 1622 and then called Wessagussett, Weymouth is the second-oldest community in Massachusetts.

Weymouth 400, the nonprofit organizing the quadricentennial celebration, will highlight four of the town's villages during events through September. Jackson Square was the first to be in the spotlight.

"It's going to highlight the businesses, the organizations and the restaurants in each zip code," George Raymond, the president of Weymouth 400, said. "This is the fabric of Weymouth we want to display."

Across the street from Crystal Leigh Customs, Kate Dias, who runs a gift shop named Beautiful Horizon, displayed green plants for sale. Dias opened her gift shop in October 2021.

"We're still pretty new, so we are trying to introduce ourselves to the people here," she said. "It's pretty cool to be a part of such an old community."

Sabrina Imbruno brought her sewn goods to the event, and laid out headbands with different patterns.

"I am happy to see people coming around for small local businesses. It has been a tough few years," she said.

Local singer Timmy Brown and music band Whiskey Six performed during the event.

Raymond said Weymouth is the second town in the state to celebrate its 400th anniversary, right after Plymouth, which had to scale down its ceremonies because of the pandemic.

"We have never done something like this," he said. "Maybe it will be something to continue. We will see."
