Fabuloso recalls nearly 5 million cleaning products over bacteria risk

It’s less-than-fabulous news for Fabuloso.

The cleaning-product company issued a recall for 4.9 million bottles of various items after failing to add a preservative “at the intended levels,” Fabuloso announced.

“With inadequate preservative, there is a risk of bacteria growth in the recalled products,” Fabuloso said Wednesday. “Therefore, the recalled products can contain Pseudomonas species bacteria.”

The recall involves Fabuloso’s Multi-Purpose Cleaners manufactured between Dec. 14 and Jan. 23. It includes some, but not all, of the brand’s lavender, refreshing lemon, ocean, passions of fruits and spring-scented products.

“People with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

“The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria.”

Fabuloso urged customers to check the UPC code on bottles and to stop using potentially contaminated products. The company also shared an online form where customers can request reimbursements.

About 80% of the affected bottles weren’t sold, Fabuloso said.
