Facebook post announces closing of Chambersburg Mall movie theater

The movie theater appears to be on the verge of joining the list of businesses formerly located in the Chambersburg Mall.

A Facebook post by AMC Classic Chambersburg 7 last week said “39 years of movies at the Mall comes to an end” and lists the years 1984-2023.

The post says the last day is Sunday, April 16. One commenter asked “Is this real?” and the reply was “We wanted to stay open, Mall owners & AMC could not strike a deal to stay open.”

A corporate spokesperson for AMC Theatres did not return calls seeking confirmation.

The Chambersburg Mall opened in 1982 and over the years has been home to retailers such as Hess’s, Gee Bee, Bon-Ton, JCPenney, Sears, Value City and Burlington.

The Chambersburg Mall was given “Zombie” status in an article headlined “Malls in Central PA ranked first to worst: Which are alive, on life support — or zombies?” by the York Daily Record, part of the USA Today Network, last year.

The article listed the only anchor store as Black Rose Antiques & Collectibles, which took the space of Sears after it closed in 2014.

Chambersburg Mall came in No. 9 on the list from first to worst with Park City Center in Lancaster sitting at No. 1 and North Hanover Mall at No. 10.
