Facebook probe by U.S. states expands to 47 attorneys general

An investigation into Facebook has grown to include 47 attorneys general.

The probe into the social media giant now includes most U.S. states as well as the U.S. territory of Guam.

The New-York led inquiry is looking at concerns that Facebook and other big tech companies engage in anti-competitive practices, expose consumer data to potential data theft and push up advertising prices.

The company had no immediate comment. Facebook shares dropped on the news.

The U.S. Justice Department, Federal Trade Commission, and the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee are also conducting their own investigations into Facebook.

The investigations are part of a larger landscape of probes of big tech firms.

As pressure mounts, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is set to testify to Congress Wednesday in a hearing on the company's cryptocurrency project, Libra.

Zuckerberg plans to tell lawmakers he supports delaying Libra's launch until regulators' concerns are fully addressed.
