South Carolina is entering the annual coughing, runny nose and headache season and health officials have advised residents get vaccinated.

Specifically, South Carolinians should get vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19 to lower their chances of getting sick and from spreading the viruses to others, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are new versions of the COVID and flu vaccines this year that are recommended for most individuals.

But even if health experts recommend getting both vaccinations, is it okay or even safe to get them at the same time?

Here’s what the DHEC and CDC say about the vaccines.

Can you get COVID and flu vaccines at same time?

According to the DHEC, patients can get COVID and flu shots at the same time, but are recommended that they get the vaccinations in separate arms. The DHEC adds that the COVID shot can actually be administered at the same time with many other types of vaccines.

“This includes simultaneous administration of COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines on the same day,” DHEC states. “If multiple vaccines are administered at a single visit, each shot can be given in a different injection site.”

The CDC also states that it’s safe to administer COVID and flu vaccinations at the same time. It’s a process called coadministration and is a common medical practice.

Studies conducted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic indicate that it is safe to get both a flu vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine at the same visit,” the CDC states.

Who should get the COVID and flu shots?

Flu and COVID vaccines are strongly recommended for everyone 6 months old and older, with rare exceptions, such as people with specific allergies and children younger than 6 months of age.
