The claim: Photos show Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Gretchen Whitmer and Cory Booker at a campaign event without masks.
Some have used photos from a Democratic campaign event to claim hypocrisy amid calls from presidential nominee Joe Biden and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris for a nationwide mask mandate.
"Not a mask in sight. Tell me again why we are being forced to wear one," the caption of one post from Teresa Kariniemi reads.
Karinimei told USA TODAY that the photo shows inconsistencies in mask wearing.
"That virus started back in December!" she wrote. "If this was about the country being open and masks why weren’t they enforced when the virus first happened?"
Photos taken at a rally on March 9
The photos in the posts were taken at a rally in Detroit on March 9, ahead of the state's primary and before pandemic-related public health restrictions went into effect in the United States.
A poster attached to the podium visible in all three of the photos reads, "Text MI to 30330" and "Biden Michigan."
At that time, there were just 566 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the nation across 34 states, per Contagion Live. The state of Michigan confirmed its first two positive coronavirus cases on March 10, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The rally took place two days before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, and four days before President Donald Trump declared the virus a national emergency on March 13, per The American Journal of Managed Care.
The suggestion in the post that the politicians were flouting mask-wearing guidelines is also untrue.
The rally took place weeks before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all people wear cloth or fabric face coverings in public space. That change came on April 3, according to USA TODAY.
Biden, Harris, Whitmer and Booker have all been photographed in masks since
Since the change, Biden, Harris, Whitmer and Booker have all been photographed wearing masks in public settings.
Biden has been photographed wearing a mask at a commemoration for Memorial Day, per the New York Times, and at campaign events in Delaware, per NBC News. Harris was photographed wearing a mask departing the floor of the Senate, per Forbes, and at campaign events in Delaware, per Business Insider.
