Factbox: Canada wildfire knocks out more than 1 million bpd of crude capacity

(Reuters) - As Canada showed optimism on Sunday that it was beginning to get a handle on its worst wildfire in recent memory, energy firms continued to close facilities in the region as precaution, with Husky Energy and Statoil becoming the latest to add to the more than 1 million barrels in capacity being taken offline. For FACTBOX on the shut down of power generation plants, see Husky Energy said it has shut production at its 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) Sunrise Energy Project near the affected Alberta wildfire area. It had trimmed its output earlier to 10,000 bpd. Statoil Asa said it will close within 24 hours its Leismer facility in northern Alberta that had a capacity 20,000 bpd. It had earlier reduced its operating capacity there by half, to also 10,000 bpd. About half of Canada's daily oil sands crude capacity is already out of service and some pipelines have also been closed as the fire, which started at 6 p.m. EDT last Sunday near the town of Fort McMurray in northeast Alberta, spread so fast that the town's 88,000 inhabitants barely had time to leave. While oil sands facilities are not in the fire's path, 11 production companies and three pipeline operators have curbed activities and moved workers and others. Reuters calculations show that nearly 1.07 million bpd of capacity was offline as 1800 GMT on Sunday.
