Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett served as a “handmaid,” the term then used for high-ranking female leaders in the People of Praise religious community, an old directory for the group's members shows. Barrett has thus far refused to discuss her membership in the Christian organization, which opposes abortion and, according to former members, holds that men are divinely ordained as the “head” of both the family and faith, while it is the duty of wives to submit to them. Portions of two People of Praise directory pages for the South Bend, Indiana, branch were shared with The Associated Press by a former member of the community on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue and because this person still has family members in People of Praise.
A conservative commentator interrupted the only woman on a CNN panel while defending Mike Pence against accusations that he repeatedly spoke over Kamala Harris during Wednesday night's vice presidential debate. Former GOP senator and Trump supporter Rick Santorum appeared on the network to discuss the clash between Ms Harris, 55, and Mr Pence, 61, both of whom went head-to-head on a number of key issues ahead of November's election. Following the contest, Mr Pence was accused of repeatedly cutting in on his rival, with a CBS News analysis showing that he made twice as many interruptions (10-5) as Ms Harris, and spoke for two minutes longer.
Mayor Bill de Blasio warned there would be “no tolerance” for violence after a night of furious protests in the city's Orthodox community over new shutdown orders in Brooklyn and Queens — which will take effect Thursday morning. Neighborhoods in so-called “red zones” where the coronavirus is rapidly spreading will face closure of nonessential businesses, strict limits on houses of worship, and a ban on gatherings under orders issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Infection rates have surged, in some cases as high as 8 percent, as city and state leaders nervously stare down a potential second wave of the virus in a city that lost close to 24,000 lives and once formed the national epicenter of the Covi...

And the alleged shooter was captured and arrested several hours later, police said, when he returned to his hotel room to pick up some belongings.
President Donald Trump may believe contracting the coronavirus was a “blessing from God,” but it's a safe bet his infected White House staff, the nearly 213,000 families of Americans who've died from COVID-19, the millions who survived it and those who still suffer from it probably feel differently. Crede Bailey, who heads the security office at the White House, contracted the virus last month and, according to Bloomberg, is “gravely ill. Bailey's department works directly with the Secret Service and handles credentials for gaining access to the White House and its surrounding grounds.
India's Future Retail Ltd shares fell 9% on Thursday after Amazon.com Inc sent a legal notice to Future Group, alleging the retailer's $3.38 billion asset sale to Reliance Industries breached an agreement with the e-commerce giant. Amazon, Reliance and Walmart Inc's Flipkart are in a race to gain market share in India's fast-growing online market for food and groceries, and analysts said Amazon's move was aimed at slowing down the Reliance-Future deal. Amazon had last year bought a 49% stake in Future Coupons Ltd, which owns a 7.3% stake in Future Retail.
Facebook has removed hundreds of fake accounts tied to right-wing group Turning Point USA, which enlisted a now-banned marketing group to flood comment sections of news stories to attack Joe Biden and Democrats while praising Donald Trump. The social media company announced on Thursday that marketing firm Rally Forge had worked with Turning Point USA to make 200 profiles and 55 pages on the platform and 76 on Instagram, beginning in 2018 and continuing through 2020. Facebook said the accounts violated the company's polices about “coordinated inauthentic behaviour” that relied “on real people, not automation” to “create the perception of wide-spread support of their narratives by leaving comments on posts by media entities and public figures.”
President Donald Trump on Thursday poured cold water on any suggestion his son, Don Jr, could run for mayor of New York City, saying he "wouldn't have a chance of winning". "No, I hope [he doesn't run] because he couldn't win as a Republican," said Mr Trump, when asked by Fox Business host, Maria Bartiromo, if Don Jr might throw his hat into the ring in the 2021 race. Mr Trump, who appears frequently on Fox, had been discussing the elimination of cash bail in New York, a policy he claimed has "destroyed" the city.

Less than four weeks before the 3 November elections, House Democrats are pursuing an obscure constitutional provision to boot Donald Trump from office over perceived concerns about his health and his “capacity to discharge the powers and duties” of his office. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin of Maryland will introduce legislation on Friday to create a so-called “Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office,” the special committee and process called for in the 25th Amendment to remove a disabled president from office and replace him with the vice president. In order to sanction and establish such a committee, both the House and the GOP-controlled Senate would have to pass the requisite legislation, an unrealistic outcome considering Mitch McConnell controls the levers of the upper chamber.

Regeneron, the company that made the antibody cocktail Trump received, told the MIT Technology Review that it used HEK 293T cells — a line of cells that scientists have used for decades — that originally came from a fetus aborted in the Netherlands in the 1970s. But so much time has passed and the cells have divided so much that scientists no longer consider them to involve abortion — a Regeneron spokeswoman said the cell lines available today "are not considered fetal tissue." A representative also told Business Insider HEK 293T cells "are immortalized epithelial cells, not stem cells, embryonic stem cells or fetal tissue."
Mike Pence once more repeated claims that a Joe Biden administration would end fracking during his debate with Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. Amid a discussion on the environment and the climate crisis on Wednesday night, Mr Pence made the unsubstantiated claim that the Democratic presidential nominee would “ban fracking”. Instead, the Democratic presidential candidate has said he would not ban the controversial drilling practice because the United States needed to “transition” to newer and cleaner energy sources.
