Fair Haven senior Sawyer Ramey named Vermont's boys basketball Gatorade player of the year

Fair Haven Union High School's Sawyer Ramey has been named Vermont's high school boys basketball player of the year, Gatorade announced Wednesday morning.

Ramey is the first player in program history to earn the Gatorade honor, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character.

The 5-foot-10 senior guard led the Slaters to a 25-1 record and a trip into the Division II state semifinals at Barre Auditorium. Ramey averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game entering the Final Four and in the Slaters' final game he poured in 23 points.

Ramey has volunteered locally on behalf of Fair Haven Concerned, a non-profit providing food, shelter and heating assistance to families in need, the news release said. He has maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom and remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.

Sawyer is the consummate point guard,” longtime Fair Haven coach Bob Prenevost said. “He’s a proven and capable scorer, but he’s at his best facilitating for others. When challenges arise, he’s the guy his teammates look to for leadership and direction.”

Through Gatorade's “Play it Forward” program, Ramey has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing.
