FCPD began a pilot program in November 2022 and assigned 30 BolaWrap devices throughout district stations to Crisis Intervention Teams.

The device is intended to restrain suspects who are not cooperating or people experiencing a mental health crisis from a distance.

After the device being successful for officers, FCPD decided to deploy BolaWrap to all of its patrol officers.

“The Fairfax County Police Department is dedicated to enhancing responsiveness, prioritizing safety and emphasizing de-escalation,” Chief Kevin Davis said in a news release. “Launching BolaWrap department-wide is expected to transform our incident resolution capacity, especially in crisis situations.”
