FAIRFIELD – A new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will launch in downtown Fairfield Thursday at the city’s Groovin’ on the Green concert featuring the Naked Karate Girls.

The Dora suspends open container laws in a specified area during certain hours, allowing those ages 21 and older to legally drink adult beverages throughout the city’s town center.

In Fairfield, the Dora encompasses 27 acres and is operational between noon and 12 a.m., daily. Signs marking the Dora area have been posted along sidewalks and roadways.

The Dora boundaries follow Wessel Drive between Pleasant Avenue (U.S. 127) and Nilles Road. It encompasses Village Green park, the Community Arts Center and the Village Green Shopping Center, exclusive of Kroger.

“We hope it will drive more people, more foot traffic, to the town center,’’ said Nathaniel Kaelin, the city’s economic development manager who helped put together the Dora.

Participating establishments where beverages can be purchased are Applebee’s, Berd’s Grill and Bar, the Fairfield Community Arts Center, Richard’s Pizza, and the Fairfield Pub.

Beverages purchased from participating vendors have to be in a specially designed Dora cup. The city has purchased 20,000 16-ounce and 2,000 9-ounce cups it is distributing to establishments, Kaelin said.

Although the official launch is at the 7 p.m., concert Thursday, beverages sold in Dora cups will be available now.

Businesses allowing adult beverages to be carried into their establishments include Couture Nails and Spa, OmIndia, Flub’s ice cream, and Snip Tease.
