Fairfield's Harbin Park renovation project to add multi-ability playground

FAIRFIELD - A splash pad with several water features and a multi-ability playground for all ages of children are being designed as the second phase of the Harbin Park renovation project.

They will replace the existing playground and shelter south of the upper parking lot. Construction is expected to start next spring and finish during the late summer or early fall.

“I’m excited where we are,” said Brad Williams, acting parks and recreation director. “We’re trying to move up the project.”

At 228 acres Harbin is the city’s largest park, located at the end of Hunter Road at the city’s southern edge. This is the first major overhaul of the park in more than 40 years.

“Let’s get it done,’’ said Councilman Tim Meyers. “The park is a gem.”

The splash pad and lazy river will be integrated into the playground area and was something residents have been asking for, most recently when the city was putting together its master plan for the park.

There will be natural features in the play area to match the park – including a ‘lazy river’ stream – along with traditional play equipment, including swings. The splash pad will have falling, spraying, and spouting water, and mushroom structures.

Four shelters will be relocated throughout the park, closer to parking areas. They will be replaced by one medium-sized shelter, large enough for about 50.

This is the second of four phases to upgrade the park, which also attracts residents from northern Hamilton County.

The almost completed first phase included construction of a 1.5 mile loop trail around the perimeter of the park; a new, large shelter and fire pit, creating a pavilion in the overlook area; restrooms; and construction of pickleball courts.

The cost was $2 million, which was offset by a $700,000 state capital grant, Williams said. The second phase is estimated at $2 million, with $300,000 coming from a state capital grant.
