Fairhaven media students recognized at national level

FAIRHAVEN — The media arts department continues to gain attraction even after students have excelled in the program.

Former film student Charles "Charlie" Fernandes received a National Student Production Award for his music video to King Guru's "She's the Only One" which was created right before the pandemic. In addition, Fernandes received four nominations in the Commercial category for his English project "Lord of the Flies," director, editor and photographer from the Boston/New England Chapter. Fairhaven High School was the only New England school to be awarded a National Student Production Award.

The music video, created in Fernandes' senior year of high school, starred junior Evan Pina Jr., now a high school senior, as the male lead. Pina received a National Student Production Award nomination for performer in the talent category.

The music video for "She the Only One" tells a love story of a girl and boy who both love great music. It won awards in eight categories at the New England Regional competition in the music video, commercial, short form non-fiction, special effects and animation, director, editor and photographer categories.

In his post-high school career, Fernandes continues his love for film through his studies at the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island.

Fairhaven Highmedia students gathered in the Performing Arts Center on Nov. 23 to view the results of the National Student Awards via livestream.

According to a media department press release, Fairhaven High has achieved 28 New England Student Production Awards and three National Student Production Awards. The school has also been nominated for 61 New England Student Production Awards and nine National Student Production Awards. The school's Media Arts program now leads the New England region with these recent awards.

"I am forever in debt to everyone from Fairhaven High School," Fernandes wrote in an email. "All my classmates and teachers were always so caring and supportive. It helps to have people around that genuinely care about your successes. Not only your success, but your well-being. Whenever I was tired, my friends would push me to keep going. Whenever I was being too hard on myself, my friends would reassure me. I really needed that."

Fernandes would like to thank Drew Furtado, Jeremy Young, Alfred McNeill, Alex Sarkis, Isabelle Pacheco, Evan Pina, Will Benoit, Adam Leidhold, Ryan Hartman, Sean Brown, Ben Davignon, Garrett Brunette, Gabe Monroe, Jake Ozcan, Aline Sarkis, Nina Medeiros, Matt Cadieux and Alyssa Botelho.

The National Student Production Awards are hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation.
