Fairhope community meeting aims to educate parents about drugs

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — From what is ‘in’ a seemingly harmless vape pen to fentanyl that looks like candy and everything in between.

“We live in this world every day dealing with it on the street, and the trends are changing day to day,” Fairhope Police Lt. Shane Nolte said.

No community is immune, and no matter how many arrests are made or how many drugs are taken off the streets, there is always more to replace them.

“The biggest threat is kids don’t know what they are getting,” Nolte said. “They may be just going to get basic marijuana which may have fentanyl in it. It scares you to see a lot of these fentanyl pills look like candy.”

Enter Jermaine Galloway, at 6’9″, he is also known as the “Tall Cop.” He is hosting a community meeting at the gym at Fairhope High School to teach parents about a world their kids are already living in.

“It’s everything from drugs even to the clothing, what the icon is on it, what it stands for,” Nolte said. “Some of those indicate whether there is a hidden pocket or compartment on it.”

Illegal drugs will always be out there but you can’t stop what you don’t know.

“It is so much to stay on top of and to know what’s going on,” Nolte said. “If I wasn’t in this job, I don’t know if I would be aware.”

The community meeting is open to all adults. It gets underway at 6 p.m. in the gym at Fairhope High School and will last until around 7:15.
