Fairlawn warns of importance of proper battery disposal after fire

FAIRLAWN, Ohio (WJW) – The City of Fairlawn is warning its residents about the importance of disposing of lithium batteries properly after a hoverboard and battery caught on fire.

According to the city’s website, a hoverboard with the battery attached was put into a bin at Fairlawn’s Andrew E. Sommbti Compactor/Recycling facility on Wednesday, Jan. 24. That is when the hoverboard and compactor caught on fire.

Fairlawn’s compactor does not accept lithium batteries, according to the city.

According to the city, lithium batteries are regulated as hazardous material and devices with lithium batteries cannot be put into garbage or recycling bins.

If a battery needs to be thrown away, it is important that it is taken to a specific disposal site including Lowe’s, Home Depot and the Summit ReWorks HHW facility for proper handling.

According to the city, alkaline batteries can also be taken to Batteries Plus Bulbs in Montrose Centre to be recycled.
