Fairview boys team eliminated from PIAA Class 2A tournament

HERSHEY — The Fairview boys tennis team experienced contrasting emotions in less than 24 hours during the Class 2A portion of the PIAA tournament over the weekend.

The Tigers, for the second straight season, were eliminated in the semifinal round at Hershey Racquet Club. Lancaster Country Day advanced to the championship dual with a 3-2 victory.

Fairview's first loss of 2022 also ended the team portion of its play at 21-1. Lancaster improved to 19-1, but then lost to District 12 Masterman 3-2 in state final.

Graham Louis was largely responsible for the Tigers' semifinal appearance. It was an improbable one when Fairview and Dallas (Pennsylvania) were tied 2-all in their Friday quarterfinal and Louis trailed his No. 3 singles match 1-6, 1-5 and match point.

The sophomore then recorded an all-time comeback. Louis saved multiple match points en route to an improbable 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over the Mountaineers' Lucas Carver.

Fairview's 3-2 victory saw its two doubles tandems win their matches ahead of Louis' epic rally.

Weary or not, Louis wasn't as fortunate in his Saturday semifinal match vs. Carson Weigle. The Lancaster sophomore's 6-1, 6-2 victory was the last of three in singles for the Cougars.

Fairview's duos in doubles, as was the case Friday, accounted for their semifinal wins. They were Jacob Mehler and Chris Spriegel in No. 1 doubles and Glenn Louis, Graham's older brother, and Jack Allen in No. 2.

Two of Fairview's players, Aravind Turaga and Nate Kisiel, will return to Hershey for the PIAA 2A doubles tournament over Memorial Day weekend.

Turaga and Kisiel qualified for that meet as District 10's gold medalists. They'll be coached by Rick Sertz, who will make his final appearance in charge of the Tigers.

Sertz announced during the district team tournament that he would resign at the conclusion of the PIAA's 2022 postseason. He's the only coach the program has known this century, having held his role since 1999.

Sertz, who turns 62 next month, said he would stay on as coach of Fairview's girls tennis program.
