Fairview girls track and field wins District 10 Class 2A team title

SLIPPERY ROCK – Malcolm Beall was frank about the Fairview girls track and field team's appearance in District 10's track and field meet.

Yes, the coach of the Tigers anticipated that they'd experience some success during Saturday's action at Slippery Rock University's Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

However, first-place success wasn't on his radar until late in the meet. Very late.

Fairview, highlighted by gold medal results from Isabel Owens and Mallory Brinling, totaled 70 points to Fort LeBoeuf's 66 in the final Class 2A girls standings.

The Tigers trailed the Bison by one point going into the 1,600-meter relay finale. Fairview, though, received five for coming in fourth overall to none for LeBoeuf.

"We went after the region title, but lost to LeBoeuf by two (points) in our dual meet," Beall said. "Then we went after first place at the Erie County Classic, and lost that by seven points. So, I actually never kept track of the team standings (Saturday). It's not that I thought our girls couldn't do it, but it wasn't at the forefront.

"It wasn't until they made the announcement with one event left that we were down by one (point). Then I thought we could do it because our (1,600 relay) should score decently. Then? Yeah, then it was good."

Owens anchored Fairview's 1,600 relay, which also included Alexa Tofel, Sophia Otteni and Sara Gennuso, to their fourth-place time of 4 minutes, 20.29 seconds. Greenville won at 4:11.13.

Fairview's Isabel Owens runs the Class 2A 800-meter run in the District 10 track and field championships at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Owens won the event.

"It is really cool to be part of this," Owens said. "There's nothing more fulfilling than seeing your work pay off like this."

The gold medal that Owens received earlier in the meet was for the 2A girls 800. The sophomore accounted for 10 team points when she completed her two laps with a low time of 2:21.81 that doubled as a personal best.

Owens was seeded first that event, as was Brinling in the discus. The junior's best toss was 115 feet, 7 inches.Owens and Brinling, like all top-two finishers in each of Saturday's 2A male and female events, automatically qualified for the PIAA meet.

While Owens has appeared in the state's cross country meet before, her Memorial Day weekend track appearance at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium will be a first.

"I really do want to go there and compete," Owens said. "I feel like I have the potential to maybe do something cool."

Friedman's latest firsts

Audrey Friedman was reponsible for 20 of LeBoeuf's 66 points. The Penn State University recruit, in her next-to-last appearance with the Bison, accumulated them with the best throws in the 2A girls javelin and shot put.

Friedman was favored in each of those events. Her best throw in the javelin, which landed at 149-8, was exactly 29 feet beyond the best from Mercer silver medalist Julia Balaski.

"I wanted the meet record, so (Saturday) was kind of a bummer," Friedman said. "But it was my second-best throw of all time so, hey, that was still good."

Hickory graduate Danielle Collier remains the district's record-setter. She's held its standard of 156-5 since 2015.Friedman's regular season throw of 151-7 remains the state's best by a female for 2022, according to pa.milesplit.com.

Long before Friedman's first javelin toss, the senior knew she was bound for Shippensburg. She won the morning's 2A shot put competition at 39-1/2.

Corry rival Rachel Brady was second at an even 36.

The Bison compiled another 20 team points with two other meet victories.

Mackenzie Huston was part of each. She led off for Maggie Morrison, Emily Samluk and Alee Young when the won the 400 relay at 50.89. Huston also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.24.

Bittersweet history for Villa

It's possible that Villa Maria runner Sarah Clark could soon be the answer to a trivia question.

Last year, the Catholic Diocese of Erie announced that it would close the West Eighth Street school at the conclusion of the current academic year. All returning Villa students would attend Cathedral Prep, which is nearing the end of a massive renovation in part to account for its new coed enrollment.

That means all of its female students as of 2022-23 would compete in athletics under Prep's banner. That also means Clark, who qualified for the PIAA 2A meet in two events, could be the last student who represents the Victors in athletics.

Mercer's Willow Myers, left, leads Villa Maria's Sarah Clark in the Class 2A 3,200-meter run in the District 10 track and field championships at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Clark won the race.
Mercer's Willow Myers, left, leads Villa Maria's Sarah Clark in the Class 2A 3,200-meter run in the District 10 track and field championships at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Clark won the race.

"We were thinking about that before all of our races," Clark said. "We've always been thinking about the team and the name. I'm really thankful to represent Villa at states one last time."

Clark, who will be a senior when she enrolls at Prep this fall, won Saturday's 3,200. Her eight-lap time of 11:31.55 was more than eight seconds faster than the 11:40.10 for Mercer's Willow Myers.

Clark also anchored the Victors to second place and a PIAA berth in the 3,200 relay. She anchored Lauren Raimy, Sarah Teed and Allison Bender to a time of 9:56.10 that was second to Greenville's 9:48.28.

Erie County Class 3A qualifiers

Two of Mercer County's traditional track and field contenders tied for first place in the district's large-school team standings.

Grove City and Hickory each finished with 127 points as the sun started to set at the Rock. The Eagles and Hornets were four better than McDowell, which finished third even though the Trojans weren't seeded first in any of Saturday's events.

McDowell did qualify four for states in Dara Fallon, Alexa Sargent, Ella Gebhardt and Gracyn Farr. They had a first-place time of 51.85 in the 400 relay.

Erie High will be represented in female track and field events at Shippensburg.

Erie High's Torreuna Roberts won the 100 meters and 200 meters in the District 10 Class 3A track and field championships at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 21, 2022.
Erie High's Torreuna Roberts won the 100 meters and 200 meters in the District 10 Class 3A track and field championships at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

The Royals' Torreuna Roberts lived up to her top-ranked status in the sprint races. The senior was timed at 12.83 in the 100 and 27.63 in the 200.

Roberts said she never had run track before this spring.

"I wish I had started sooner so I could have had better times," Roberts said. "It's a bittersweet moment knowing this is my (only) year of running, but that I've made it this far. I'm very proud of myself because I never thought I'd be going to states."

D'Annah Davis will provide some welcome company to Roberts. The junior also also will compete at Shippensburg as the district's 3A winner in the javelin (124-9).

Sydney Bayle was another Erie County gold medalist at the Rock. The General McLane distance specialist was a comfortable victor in the 3,200 with her time of 12:08.37. Franklin's Nadalie Latchaw was second at an even 12:42.
