Faith-based yoga studio to offer free class for cancer survivors

HOLLAND — A faith-based nonprofit yoga studio in Holland will host a free workshop for those who previously or currently are experiencing a cancer diagnosis.

"Yoga for Cancer" by Journey of Hope Yoga — 12719 Riley St. in Holland — will run 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. The event includes a discussion about the healing benefits of yoga and demonstrations.

Sue Watson has participated in classes regularly at the studio following a double mastectomy and said the sessions have changed her life.

“I was in constant pain, never really able to relax my muscles and my joints hurt constantly,” Watson said. “After two years of learning to breathe and gently move, my pain only comes in short spurts. My body is healing and my soul is nourished.”

The workshop is led by Bonnie Gruppen, who opened the studio with Ria Nieboer in 2018. Gruppen has specialty training from Yoga4Cancer, Yoga for Osteoporosis, and Mental Health Aware Yoga.

Gruppen said the class is open to all, and will teach breath work, gentle movement, stretching and restoration. She hopes participants walk away with tools to improve their lives.
