With more than 100 scheduled productions, from 17th-century chamber classics to modern film scores, music fans in Hampton Roads will have plenty of opportunities to hear their favorites performed live. Season highlights include two familiar faces.

JoAnn Falletta, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s longtime music director, retired in 2020 but is returning in March to lead the VSO Chorus in Mozart’s “Requiem.” In keeping with the theme, they will also perform Richard Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration.” Falletta’s career remains as vibrant as ever. The Grammy winner is the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the Brevard Music Center and artistic adviser to the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. She also holds the title of VSO’s music director laureate.

The other familiar face is world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. While he performed in Norfolk in April, he hasn’t performed with the VSO since 1999. VSO music director Eric Jacobsen, a cellist whom Ma mentored for 20 years, will conduct selections of Dvorak. Jacobsen is also a member of the Silk Road Ensemble, which Ma formed to foster cultural collaboration among musicians from around the globe. That ensemble will perform at three venues in Hampton Roads from May 12-14.
