Fall Arts Calendar 2022 | Theater

As the season gets into full swing, a standout on the substantial list of productions is Old Dominion University’s “Macbeth” in November, William Shakespeare’s Scottish play about power, lust and guilt.

The show will be directed by Chris Hanna, a professor and director of theater at ODU, and artistic director emeritus at Virginia Stage Company. While “Macbeth” is not the Bard’s bloodiest tragedy, it’s still heavy on the gore, expertly captured by the show poster, which features a hand dripping in blood. It screams Lady Macbeth’s famous line, “Out, damn spot,” and is enough to make any Shakespeare fan eager to enter a dark theater to be transported to a land populated by creepy witches, conniving wives and tyranny-prone Thanes in tartan. Hanna said the show will have historical and contemporary horror elements.

Whether set in the 11th century or in the future, it sounds like this “Macbeth” won’t disappoint.

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

Indeed.
