Fall begins, Trump visits the United Nations: 5 things you need to know Monday

Trump faces world of heat at the United Nations

President Donald Trump kicks off his third United Nations meeting Monday where escalating tensions between the United States and Iran are only the beginning of his troubles. The recent missile and drone attack on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia will be top on the agenda at behind-the-scenes meetings. A senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Trump will use the U.N. to try to build a consensus on what to do about Iran. The hottest ticket in New York will be at the Climate Action Summit, where world leaders plan to address increasing climate change. Trump, who wants to pull the U.S. out of the 2015 Paris agreement to cut emissions, won't participate, but UN observers say China and about 70 other countries could make big announcements.

Farewell, flip-flops. And hello pumpkin spice

Finally, the first day of fall. Our long, hot summer is coming to an end Monday with the autumnal equinox, which marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Although some people claim the autumnal equinox is the "official" start of fall, there is no administrative or political organization that actually designates that. On the autumnal equinox, the amount of daylight and night are both roughly 12 hours long over most of the world. This will be true Monday from as far north as Utqiagvik, Alaska — north of the Arctic Circle — to as far south as Wellington, New Zealand, the world's southernmost capital city.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan begin Africa tour

Princess Diana has been gone for more than two decades, but the late royal's memory will surely be present when Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan begin their trip to Africa on Monday. Though it is not clear if baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor will be seen much beyond their arrivals and departures, the royals are scheduled to visit South Africa together, with Harry also visiting Angola, Malawi and Botswana. Harry's solo visit to Angola is expected to be "a particularly significant and poignant journey," according to the Buckingham Palace. The trip recalls for millions the moving pictures of Diana, eight months before her death in a Paris car crash, visiting a de-mining site and meeting mine victims in Huambo.

Trial to begin of ex-Dallas cop who fatally shot unarmed black man in his home

Testimony is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of a former Dallas police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man in his own home last year. Amber Guyger, who is white, said she mistook the neighbor’s apartment for her own and thought 26-year-old Botham Jean was a burglar. According to a 911 recording, Guyger can be heard apologizing to Jean, a 26-year-old native of the Caribbean island St. Lucia who worked in Dallas for an accounting and consulting firm. The Dallas Police Department fired Guyger after the shooting.

Tropical Storm Karen rolls toward Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands

Authorities in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are urging residents to prepare for heavy winds, rain and damage as Tropical Storm Karen rolls toward the islands. Karen is expected to pass near or over both Tuesday, after moving across the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday. Its exact path undetermined, Karen will gradually intensify early this week, bringing an uptick in downpours and gusty winds as it approaches, AccuWeather said. The storm is a blip on the weather map compared to the ferocity of Maria, but the island's power grid remains unstable, and hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans live in housing still in disrepair from the fury of Maria's 175-mph winds and rampant flooding. Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced said an emergency management plan has been activated across the island of 3.2 million people.
