It’s finally time to break out those carving tools.

If you’re a fan of foraging your pumpkins from a local patch, there are plenty to choose from across the Kansas City area, and most are open until the end of October.

In addition to pumpkins, most farms have other attractions like photo opportunities, mazes and apple cider.

Before you hit the patches, here are some quick tips on how to score the perfect pumpkin, according to Kansas State University Extension.

For starters, try to avoid soft spots, which means the pumpkin could be rotting on the inside. One key to picking a nice, mature pumpkin is to try using your fingernail. If it’s hard to make a scratch, the pumpkin is mature. If it’s easy to make a mark, it is probably not ready for picking.

Lastly, once you’ve found your perfect pumpkin, carry it from its base instead of by its stem. Otherwise, you could accidentally drop and bruise the pumpkin. For more tips from K-State Extension, visit here.
