Fall high school sports playoffs in New Bern, Kinston: Onto Round 4 of football

As the regular season for fall high school sports come to a close, eyes begin turning toward the postseason, long playoff runs and, in some cases, state championship dreams.

Tuesday, Nov. 8, Update

The second round of the state football playoffs will now be on Thursday night in the eastern half of North Carolina, as many coastal areas expect heavy rain and storm surge from Nicole, the tropical system forming near Florida in the Atlantic Ocean.

Saturday, Oct. 29, Update

With conference championships for New Bern and West Craven, and Havelock's finish at the best 3A team in the Big Carolina, Craven County will be the home of plenty of high school playoff games this November, as long as teams keep winning.

New Bern is the No. 2 seed in 4A East and gets Sanderson at home in Round 1. Havelock takes the No. 4 seed in 3A East; the Rams open with Vance County. And in 2A East, the Eagles are No. 6 and take on Bunn.All first-round games are Friday, Nov. 4.

State cross country regionals also were run Saturday. State soccer pairings came out Friday, with North Lenoir the only local team making the tournament. Local teams bowed out of the state volleyball tournament in Tuesday's second round.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, Update

The NCHSAA state girls golf tournament concluded on Tuesday, with New Bern senior Madelyn Vogun finishing a strong career with a top-10 finish in the 4A championships at Pinehurst No. 6. Vogun had rounds of 74-79--153 to tie for seventh individually. Myers Park sophomore Eilzabeth Rudisill set the NCHSAA record for 36-hole score, shooting 134 to win by seven shots.

Cross Country

3A State Championships: Freshman Sarah Fedyna of Havelock finished 18th in 20:41.59, third-fastest among freshman girls. Teammate Kaitlynn Howell was 93rd (23:17.44).

2A State Championships: South Lenoir's Chris Haro finished 21st overall in 17:28.60 to lead the Blue Devils to 13th place in the boys team competition. Senior Alex Flores finished 53rd. On the girls side, South's Charley Whitacre finished 23rd overall (21:51.15) as the Blue Devils girls also took 13th in the team race. Sage Jones (63rd) and Claudia Castillo (67th) had the team's next highest finishes.

1A State Championships: Pamlico County took 11th in the boys team event, led by senior Jackson Sheaffer's 27th-place finish (18:36.83). Neil Landow (61st) had the next-best finish for the Hurricanes.

3A East Regional Girls: Sarah Fedyna of Havelock finished fifth in the race in Jacksonville to qualify as an individual for next week's state championships. She ran a time of 19:12.77 as the top runner from a team that didn't qualify. Teammate Kaitlynn Howell was 15th overall and took the final individual spot for states.

2A East Regional Boys: South Lenoir's Chris Haro won the individual title on Saturday in Kinston, leading the Blue Devils to second place as a team and a spot in next Saturday's state championships. Haro ran a time of 16 minutes, 48.13 seconds to win by 20 seconds. Alex Flores (13th), Derek Kopanski (17th), Wyatt Reavis (24th), Alex Renteria (25th) also counted for South Lenoir.

2A East Regional Girls: South Lenoir finished third as a team, led by Charley Whitacre's third-place finish that qualified her for the state meet next week. Manteo won with 18 points, taking five of the top six places. Whitacre's teammates Sage Jones (11th) and Claudia Castillo (14th) also advanced to states.

1A East Regional Boys: Pamlico took second as a team, led by senior Jackson Sheaffer's fifth-place finish. Neil Landow (7th), Caleb Toler (12th), Johan Garcia Gonzales (13th) and Ross McLamb (21st) also scored for the Hurricanes.

Girls Golf

4A State Finals: New Bern's Madelyn Vogun shot 74-79--153 at Pinehurst No. 6 to tie for seventh in the individual standings.

4A East Regional: New Bern's Madelyn Vogun shot 79 on Tuesday at Landfall in Wilmington to finish fourth in the individual tournament and qualify for next week's state tournament.
