Fall NCHSAA playoff updates in Fayetteville: Football games moved to due to Subtropical Storm Nicole

Due to weather concerns from the incoming Subtropical Storm Nicole, Cumberland County high school football teams have moved their playoff games to Thursday.

Trinity Christian, Fayetteville's only private school program, will play at Covenant Day at 6 p.m. in the NCISAA playoffs. In the NCHSAA playoffs, Pine Forest travels to Holly Springs for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Seventy-First and Terry Sanford have second-round home games scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Here's a look at the high school football schedule for the second round of the playoffs.

NCHSAA Second Round (Thursday, Nov. 10)

Class 3A: No. 7 Terry Sanford (9-2) vs. No. 10 Scotland (7-4), 7:30 p.m.

Class 3A: No. 3 Seventy-First (11-0) vs. No. 14 J.H. Rose (8-3), 7:30 p.m.

Class 4A: No. 9 Pine Forest (9-2) at No. 8 Holly Springs (9-2), 7 p.m.

NCISAA Semifinals (Thursday, Nov. 10)

Division II: Trinity Christian (6-4) at Covenant Day (7-3), 6 p.m.

Girls Tennis

Cape Fear girls tennis will play for a second straight state championship.

The fifth-seeded Colts (17-1) beat No. 3 Fike (20-2) to win the NCHSAA 3A East Regional Championship.

Anna Piland won her marathon singles match to clinch the 5-1 win and regional crown for Cape Fear, which plays No. 4 Lake Norman Charter (20-1) on Saturday for the 3-A state title.

Piland won 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 1-0 (12-10) as the Colts' No. 1 singles player. Brooke Bieniek and Shea Bieniek won 6-0, 6-0 in their singles match. Andi Brinker (6-3, 6-1) and Brianna Keen (6-1, 6-0) rounded out the singles wins for the Colts.

The state championship match begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Brooke Bieniek and Piland earned a runner-up finish at the NCHSAA 3A doubles state championship on Oct. 29.

Bieniek and Piland earned a pair of victories Oct. 28, beating North Lincoln (6-0, 6-0) and Croatan (6-0, 6-1), to secure a spot in the semifinal against Franklin. The duo secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory to lock up a spot in the state championship.

Fike's doubles team won the 3A title with a victory in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-1) against the Colts. Brooke and Piland have advanced to the state championship in back-to-back seasons. They won the state championship in 2021.

Football

Pine Forest and Seventy-First have won a conference championship in football for the second straight season.

The Falcons (10-0, 7-0) completed an undefeated regular season as champions of the United 8 Conference. The Trojans (8-2, 7-0) reeled off seven straight wins in the All American Conference to put a bow on back-to-back titles.

Cape Fear (7-3, 5-2), Jack Britt (7-3, 6-1), Terry Sanford (8-2, 6-1) and Westover (6-4, 3-4) also made the playoff field.

Girls Golf

The Cape Fear girls golf team earned a seventh-place finish in the NCHSAA 3A state championship at Longleaf Golf Club.

Lexi Perez shot 93-94 to finish in a tie for 29th for the Colts. In the 4A tournament at Pinehurst No. 6, Pine Forest's Alex Paquin (94-99) finished 67th and Jack Britt's Isabel Musselwhite (97-110) finished 75th.
