Fall River's Mr. Chen expanding with new eatery, a new concept

FALL RIVER — If you're a fan of the city's popular Chinese spot Mr. Chen, then you're in luck.

Less than a year after making its debut at 210 Rhode Island Ave., Mr. Chen will be expanding to a second South End location.

Owner and chef Dominic Chen is gearing up to share his creative cuisine at a new spot — this time with a new focus — with the purchase of the long-vacant 250 Jefferson St. building, which formerly housed Katrina's Bakery.

While not yet official as of Wednesday, Chen said that his offer was accepted and he's in the process of doing some inspections, and that the sale is "pretty much confirmed" and "ready to go."

Plans for the building are still in the works, but Chen revealed it will be a slightly different concept than the Mr. Chen you're used to. For one, it's not going to be a Chinese restaurant, he said.

"It will be a second location for bubble teas and a small bakery ... cake and stuff like that," Chen said.

A go-to for Chinese takeout in Fall River, Mr. Chen opened its doors July 19 of last year to quite a bit of fanfare.

Chen has lured local foodies with a combination of unique decor — featuring an impressive Lego collection on display inside the eatery — and a menu of chocked full of Chinese fare favorites, and crafted with his SouthCoast customer base in mind.

That includes unique Asian fusion options that add a Portuguese flair to some traditional dishes and apps - from the cacoila egg roll to cacoila fried wonton or wonton soup, chourico fried rice and lo mein or the chourico rangoon —  aka the "Domtastic."

Mr. Chen’s wide selection of bubble tea has also been a big draw from the get-go, and will be served at the new location.

The Jefferson Street building also generated interest recently from another well-known area eatery.

This past fall, Mario's Kitchen Bifana announced the closure of its 207 Swansea Mall Drive location as of Sept. 29, alerting customers via Facebook that they would be moving to the Fall River spot by Oct. 17. But those plans never materialized. The Jefferson Street building has Mario's signs in the window but has not been operational.

Calls placed to the phone number listed on MKB's website for updates on the business have gone unanswered for weeks, and messages sent to their Facebook page and email had not been returned until this week.

On Monday, Mario's Kitchen Biafana responded via Facebook message that they were expected to reopen next week at 314 East Main St., Fall River.

In a May 27 Facebook post, they announced they would be serving up feast favorites — Pregos (steak sandwiches), Portuguese hot dogs, bifanas (pork sandwiches) and more — at the Fall River's Day of Portugal festivities at the Gates of the City this past weekend.
