Fall weather has come to the Bradenton area. But how long will this cool feeling last?

You can feel it: Cool weather is back in Manatee County.

After a summer of heat advisories and record warm weather, Bradenton woke up to an unfamiliar feeling Monday morning: temperatures in the 60s.

Cooler temperatures continued into Tuesday, with highs not expected to surpass the mid70s, with an even chillier expected on Tuesday night, with a low of around 56, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

“We ran into an early season cold front that came through behind a much cooler and higher air mass that moved into the area, and that’s what we experienced yesterday morning and will experience tonight,” said Nicole Carlisle, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay.

But this kind of weather isn’t uncommon for this time of year in Florida, NWS Tampa Bay said in a social media post this week.

While the autumnal equinox was on Sept. 23, it usually takes a while before fall temperatures catch up to what we think of as fall weather.

“The first shot of cooler drier air is usually rather short lived — lasting only a day or two. The real cool-down doesn’t usually occur until November,” the weather service says on its website.

The average date for the first low of the year below 60 degrees for the Bradenton-Sarasota area is Oct. 19 since records began in 1911, according to NWS data.

But Floridians shouldn’t expect the cool weather to last.

While Carlisle said we may have one more cool morning on Wednesday, the high pressure responsible for the low temperatures will eventually move off to the east, causing more normal Florida weather to roll back in.

It could still be slightly cooler than usual, she says, but “certainly not like what we saw Monday or Tuesday.”

The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay forecasts highs in the low- to mid-80s through most of the week, with lows remaining in the 60s in what is expected to be a a gradual warming in the region.

So it looks like we may have to wait a little longer for fall weather that lasts.
