Fallen tree closes bridge in this Bellingham park

A tree fell across one of two footbridges over Squalicum Creek in Cornwall Park, forcing a short detour from the parking lots on the park’s south end until the span can be examined.

Part of a multi-trunk cedar tree collapsed over the east footbridge on Sunday, May 22, said Nicole Oliver, director of the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department.

No injuries were reported, Oliver told The Bellingham Herald.

“It broke the railing on both sides but I don’t think it damaged the bridge,” Oliver said.

City engineers were going to assess the damage on Monday afternoon, May 23.

“I’m hoping that we can just fix the railing and get it open really quickly,” she said.

Meanwhile, the bridge is blocked by the tree and caution tape.
