Falling tree branch hits man in head in Brooklyn playground, leaving him in critical condition

A man sitting on a Brooklyn park bench was critically injured when a tree branch fell and hit him in the head, police said Sunday.

The victim was relaxing in Reinaldo Salgado Playground on Monroe St. near Patchen Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant when the branch fell about 8:20 a.m. Saturday, cops said.

The tumbling tree limb struck him in the head. Medics rushed him to Kings County Hospital with a severe head injury.

The “failed limb” was about 40 feet above the man’s head when it toppled, a Parks Department spokesperson said.

He remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

The victim was not carrying ID, and cops were working to identify him.

The London Planetree — which is 28 inches in diameter — was inspected by a Parks forestry expert in August 2020, who found the tree to be in good condition, the spokesperson said. The tree was last pruned in July 2020.
