Falling utility pole injures Wagener-Salley High School teacher

Aug. 23—A truck striking overhead power lines caused a utility pole to fall on a Wagener-Salley High School teacher Wednesday afternoon not far from the school, officials confirmed.

At 12:39 p.m., a 2014 Peterbilt truck heading north on S.C. Highway 113 struck overhead power lines near the Pickens Street intersection, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover with South Carolina Highway Patrol.

This caused a nearby utility pole to fall onto a pedestrian headed south on S.C. 113, Glover said. The pedestrian was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers before being flown to Augusta University Medical Center

Wagener Fire Chief David Watson confirmed that the pedestrian is a teacher at Wagener-Salley.

The episode sent the school on a soft lockdown, according to a post on the school's website.

"We appreciate your concern, thoughts, and prayers, and will update our community with any additional information as soon as we are able," the post said.

Counselors were on campus Wednesday afternoon and will be available for the rest of the week to support students and staff.
