‘Fame’ and ‘Flashdance’ singer Irene Cara’s cause of death revealed

Oscar- and Grammy-winning star Irene Cara died from hypertension and high cholesterol, according to a Thursday report.

Cara, who sang the title tracks in “Fame” and “Flashdance,” died at age 63 in November. Her cause of death was not announced at the time.

The Pinellas County, Fla., medical examiner determined that Cara died from arteriosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, TMZ reported. She died at her home in the county, which includes St. Petersburg.

The New York native began acting at a young age and got her breakthrough role at age 20 when she starred in “Fame.” She sang the title track, which won the Academy Award for best original song. Cara was also nominated for best actress at the Golden Globes.

Three years later, she sang the title track for “Flashdance.” That time, she helped write the song and got to take home a golden statuette when it, too, won best original song at the Oscars. Cara also won the Grammy for best female pop vocal performance for the song.
