When Fame actress and singer Irene Cara died in November at 63, reports provided few details. However, TMZ says she died of hypertension and high cholesterol after reviewing the medical examiner’s reports.

Cara’s publicist confirmed her death in November in a statement. In it, she wrote, “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family, I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award Winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer, passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.”

Her publicist added, “Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul, whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial service for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

Cara, who TMZ reports had diabetes, became famous in the 1980s for her role in Fame and for singing the title song before co-writing and recording “Flashdance…What a Feeling” for the film Flashdance. She also starred in iconic films like Sparkle and Aaron Loves Angela.

The Bronx native won a Grammy and an Academy Award for “Flashdance…What a Feeling” and received a best actress Golden Globe nomination for her role in Fame.
