GREEN BAY — As inflation pushes up the cost of back-to-school shopping, families can expect to pay more for their supply lists this year, and many are cutting back where they can.

Two events in Green Bay aim to take some of the financial pressure off families as they get their children ready for the start of the school year.

The Back to School Bash on Sunday and the Back-to-School Store Tuesday and Wednesday will offer families free school supplies along with other services.

The Back to School Bash, hosted by Green Bay First ministry, is a free, public event where families can receive school supplies and school-aged children can get haircuts for a fresh first-day-of-school 'do. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family registration begins at 9 a.m. Sunday followed by a church service at 10 a.m. at the ministry's main building at 1460 Shawano Ave. in Green Bay. The event will continue with bouncy houses and carnival games.

The organization's clothing closet will also be open and groceries will be distributed while supplies last.

Then there is the Service League of Green Bay's Back-to-School Store which will be at UW-Green Bay's Kress Events Center from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday .

Family participation for this event is through local agencies and volunteers can sign up on the Service League's website.

Kids in grades kindergarten through fifth will get a new backpack, gym shoes and other supplies for the school year. They will also get a new toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.

About 1,500 kids are invited to the event and an additional 1,500 middle schoolers will receive a backpack.
