Family blindsided by rising oil prices receives help from Needy Fund

Skyrocketing gas prices over the past few months have made day-to-day living more expensive and difficult.

One lower Cape family, after combining households and resources to cut costs, were blindsided when oil prices rose dramatically in the spring to double what they paid for last year.

These retired relatives, already living with limited resources, were dealt another blow when one family member was diagnosed with cancer.

This family reached out to the Needy Fund that filled up their oil tank and provided resources and referrals for medical assistance needed as the family cares for a sick relative.

More about the Needy Fund

Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with several immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.

No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.

How to donate to the Needy Fund
