The family of an Asian woman who was shot and killed in Los Angeles Saturday believes the murder was racially motivated and are demanding a hate crime investigation.

“There has been a dramatic increase of women of Asian descent being murdered or violently attacked nationwide,” Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, said in a statement.

Sia Marie Xiong, 28, was shot shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday in Compton. Law enforcement arrived at the scene and transported Xiong to the hospital where she died.

However, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said there very little is known at this juncture.

According to CBS Los Angeles, LASD Lt. Brandon Dead said the shooting did not appear to be racially motivated.

“There is no known motive or any suspect information,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing.”
