Family, cats escape house fire with help from Easton firefighters

EASTON – A family escaped an early-morning blaze with one of their cats and an Easton firefighter rescued the other.

Fire broke out in a one-story ranch tucked at the end of Eisenhower Drive. Firefighters responded about 2:55 a.m. Friday, and put the fire out within 40 minutes, according to Chief Justin Alexander of the the Easton Fire Department.

Preliminary investigations show the fire was an accident, but no cause had been determined at press time Friday.

The fire had likely been going "for a significant amount of time" before emergency crews were called, according to a press release.

Two people were home when the fire started. The home suffered extensive damage, displacing the residents. They are being helped by family members, authorities said. Property records show the 1,477-square-foot home was built in 1962.

Several nearby agencies helped, including the fire departments of Stoughton and West Bridgewater, Brewster Ambulance, Easton Animal Control, the Easton Community Emergency Response Team and Mansfield Emergency Management. The Brockton Fire Department aided by covering a crash on Depot Street in Easton.
