The DTE Energy Foundation recently awarded grants of $420,000 to 45 Michigan domestic violence shelters. One of the shelters is in Monroe County.

Family Counseling and Shelter Services of Monroe County received a grant for $6,500, Crystal Martin, executive director of the center, said.

This is the fourth grant Family Counseling and Shelter Services of Monroe County has received from DTE. Other awards were given in December 2021, 2020 and 2019. Last year’s grant was for $6,100.

In four years, the DTE Foundation has awarded more than $2.2 million to support domestic violence shelters.

“The tragic consequences of domestic violence are present in every county of our state and every aspect of our daily life,” said Lynette Dowler of Monroe County, president of the DTE Foundation. “The DTE Foundation remains committed to supporting these shelters that provide a safe haven to individuals forced to flee abusive relationships or settings. These agencies are a lifeline for victims and their families.”

Awards are based on bed count and go to critical expenses at each location. Funding also will be used to offer holistic survivor-centric services that include housing, transportation, employment and support for survivors who need assistance with health care needs or are struggling to navigate the criminal justice system, DTE said.

DTE team member volunteers also created more than 2,400 hygiene kits that were given to shelters across the state.
