Family displaced, dog dies in Washington County weekend fire

FAIRPLAY — Nine people were displaced from a residential trailer fire in Fairplay on Sunday night that also killed a dog, according to the Maryland state fire marshal's office.

The American Red Cross is helping the family after the fire destroyed the trailer at 7833 Sharpsburg Pike and damaged a nearby camper trailer, according to a news release from the fire marshal's office and the office's spokesman.

The family was living in both the residential trailer and the camper trailer, said Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire, spokesman for the fire marshal's office.

The office is investigating the cause of the fire, which was reported around 6:50 p.m. Sunday.

Sharpsburg Pike also is known as Md. 65.

A resident discovered the fire, which originated in the area of the front porch steps, the news release states.

It took firefighters 10 minutes to get the fire under control.

Under control generally means the main fire is out and firefighters are searching for hot spots.

About 65 firefighters responded, including from the primary responder, the Community Volunteer Fire Co. of District 12 in Fairplay.

Among the other emergency services to respond were firefighters from Sharpsburg, Boonsboro, Williamsport, Funkstown, Hagerstown and Jefferson County, W.Va., as well as Sharpsburg Area EMS, according to a Washington County 911 supervisor and Hagerstown Fire Department's Facebook page.

At least one smoke alarm activated.

The damage was estimated at $20,000 for the structure and $10,000 for its contents, the release states.
