Family facing significant damage to home following flooding in Munhall

Nearly a week has passed since flooding caused significant damage to homes in Munhall.

Along Shady Avenue, one theme has been constant: insurance isn’t helping.

“When floods happen, there’s no help. Red Cross, they help, but there’s so much they’re limited to do,” Heather Grove said.

We first introduced you to Grove last week after water rushed down the street, filling her basement with five feet of water and raw sewage. She and her family have been cleaning up ever since.

The sidewalk outside her home is covered in items from her basement. We asked her if all of it was lost.

“All of it. You want me to open up the bags? You want to smell the poop water?” she said.

Some items have been replaced including medical equipment for her son. But, restoring all of what was lost will be costly. Grove had renters’ insurance, but it won’t cover anything from the flood.

“If you want a flood insurance policy, you have to have a separate flood insurance policy,” said Brennan Hurley, who owns Hurley Insurance Brokers. He says even flood insurance isn’t a catch-all.

“Even if you have a flood policy, nothing in the basement will be covered. You’d have to move that up to the first floor when a flood is coming,” he said.

Flood insurance is available to all homeowners, even if the house is not located in a designated flood plain.

“If you’re in a lower risk zone, then your policy is going to be much more affordable and you’ll have better options with private flood markets,” Hurley said.

“Nobody should have to go through what we have to go through to figure out how we’re going to get on top again,” Grove said.
