Family-friendly Braintree Pride festival this Sunday

BRAINTREE – The inaugural Pride Festival sponsored by Braintree Pride will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Watson Park on Gordon Road.

The family-friendly event will feature food and ice cream trucks, a fire engine, a bounce house, music and vendors. Admission is free.

District 3 Town Councilor Elizabeth Maglio said she excited about the inaugural celebration, especially because it will be in her district.

Celebrations like this are "opportunities to show support and respect for all the different types of families who live in Braintree," she said.

Maglio was the sponsor of the new town Pride Ordinance, approved by a 7-1 vote of the town council last month and supported by Mayor Charles Kokoros.

"The Town of Braintree supports the rights, freedoms and equal treatment of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) individuals and acknowledges that LGBTQ+ rights are human rights," the ordinance reads.

It establishes a celebration of Pride Month each June, including flying a Pride flag in front of town hall.

Maglio said a town hall Pride flag-raising ceremony will be scheduled for later this month.

A Pride flag was raised in front of town hall last year.
