Family-friendly Dìa de los Muertos events in ABQ

Oct. 25—Dìa de los Muertos is a time for friends and family to gather to celebrate life and remember loved ones who have died.

A variety of events are coming to the city over the next two weeks for the family to enjoy.

Dìa de los Muertos in Old Town

Old Town Plaza will be dressed in marigolds with ofrendas scattered throughout the area honoring community members' loved ones. The ofrendas will be decorated by community members and students from San Felipe de Neri School and Escuela del Sol Montessori. The event lasts a whole week with different events every day, and Saturday is family day. Events will include live music, games, vendors, Mass and a showing of Disney's "Coco" to end the day.

Sugar Skull Family Craft

Make felted sugar skulls to take home for your Dìa de los Muertos celebrations.

Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Masks for Kids

All materials will be provided for kids 6 and up to make their own sugar skull masks. The craft is free, but registration is required online.

Family Movie: "The Book of Life"

The library plays a movie on the first and third Saturday of every month.

Snacks will be provided at the showing.

Sugar Skull Fun Run

This run has fun for the whole family. There is a timed 5 kilometer run/walk for ages 12 and up, and a timed 5 kilometer run/walk for children 6 to 11-years-old.

There will also be a one-mile Strut and Stroll for all ages, and pets are welcome.

Race shirts are available for purchase on race day, and there will be food trucks and the Muerto Market.

This is a rain or shine event, no refunds will be given.

LOCATION: Along Tingley Drive between Central and Eighth NW. Park at the Bugarium parking lot at the ABQ BioPark.

Dìa de los Muertos Community Celebration of Life

This event invites the whole family — including pets — to join in the celebration of life with local folk-art vendors, kids' coloring and craft table, live music and a sugar skull workshop, which is free for the first 100 people. A pet blessing takes place at 11 a.m.

South Valley Dìa de los Muertos Celebration and Marigold Parade

This celebration draws its influences from Jose Guadalupe Posada's early 1900s portrayal of personalities and professions as skeletons or calaveras. The parade starts at the historic Gutierrez Hubbell house. Parking is limited, so carpooling is recommended.

Albuquerque Dìa de los Muertos Parade

This inaugural city parade invites people from all backgrounds to gather and celebrate the living and honor loved ones. The festivities will begin at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at noon and the parade will depart at 7 p.m. from NHCC and head toward the Albuquerque Civic Center, where festivities will continue until 10 p.m. Enjoy live music, concessions, arts and crafts and more at this celebration of life. The parade is open to anyone who wishes to participate, but organizers ask that attire remain authentic, and reserve the right to deny entrance.
