Family honors Danville doctor by donating to birthing center renovations

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The family of a longtime Danville doctor is making sure his legacy lives on.

Dr. John Mason Jr. worked at OSF Medical Center in Danville for more than 40 years. He delivered more than 10,000 babies during his time there.

Former Danville Mayor Bob Jones dies at 85

Mason died in 2020 at the age of 90. His family has now donated money to renovate the birthing center after Mason’s son had a recent look around.

“We discussed what our dream was and what we’d like to do for the OB,” Major Gift Officer Debbie Michenfelder said. “And so we took him on a tour of the OB department, because we really haven’t done a complete renovation probably since the ’80s.”

The project is set to cost around $5 million and scheduled to start by the first of next year.
